I tried it, and I'll be honest: I hated it. The format is just so, so bad for RP compared to things like forums and journals and even PBEM or chats.

Not only that, I had really bad OOC experiences too. Tumblr is populated by a lot of teenagers and it shows in the general behavior there. People think it's okay to spam your ask box demanding RP, to trash-talk a pairing you're playing or try to ship push, or just plain be creepy at you. I've never had people do that on forums before so it was a huge shock to me.

I eventually ended up moving over to RPing here on Dreamwidth and I'm much happier. The RP quality is higher, the format is a million times more convenient, and I've had more positive OOC interactions too.

Meanwhile, Tumblr is more accepting of AUs, OCs and anything not 100% canon 100% of the time. It's a trade-off.

I don't RP AUs or OCs so I can't give personal experiences on that end, but the OCs in the game I'm in right now seem to be quite well received and get plenty of people playing with them.
