I do sort of go with the idea that something happened to Loki in the void, either by Thanos's hand or someone else's, since he really wasn't looking right when he first turned up and his viciousness was dialed up to 11(not that he wasn't plenty vicious to begin with, but he is worse in Avengers than Thor). But I also don't agree with the idea that Loki was only messing shit up because it was Thanos's will, he was clearly in his own mind when he opened up the rift to let the Chitari through and was more than happy to watch the Earth burn because of reasons.

I mean I see it as sort of an added explanation to his behaviour but certainly not an excuse for it.

Agree. He is clearly also in pain and afraid after the little mind chat they have, I always thought it was obvious his time with Thanos wasn't pleasant. But I also agree Loki had his own agency still and his own plan possibly. He seems generally worried when he says to Stark that nothing can stop the Chitari invasion now. I like to think Loki was intending to let the Avengers and the Chitari slaughter each other then once the battle was over he intended to screw Thanos over, close the portal and rule Earth for himself.

Oh yeah I agree with you on his plan in Avengers, I can totally see him unleashing the two groups on each other and then taking down whoever was left standing at the end so that he could rule.

I always swing in roundabouts when it comes to his more worried/concerned moments because I do think he was at least a little bit scared of Thanos(who wouldn't be? The guy is not a nice person, just look at what he does to his 'daughters' in GoTG), but he's also such a duplicitous little shit that it makes it hard to tell when he's actually being sincere.

So I tend to go with a it's little bit of both really.
