so Light never "went insane": he was in the first place.

Remember that famous quote, "power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely"? I think you ALSO missed the point of the series.

Well, not really. I think it's more complicated than that. The Death Note clearly inspires different reactions in different people. The kid who got it in the pilot used it, and then after experiencing the results was desperate to reverse them. Mikami in his heart did not have the same motivations as Light, but simply wanted to erase everyone who had ever bothered him, and everyone like them. Misa wanted revenge (up until she met Light, that is). None of them ever thought "I want to, and really can, rule the world and become a God."

In other words, the Death Note works with what it has. And this reveals that what Light was before the Note came to him was already pretty potentially ugly. Maybe not "mad" precisely, but what would have happened if the Note had ever come? Could he have continued to hide his disgust with the world, his feelings of superiority, his belief in a world of black and white (all shown in the earliest chapters of the manga, just prior to receiving the DN and in the first few days of owning it)? He might have, and he might have also cracked at some point. In other words, Light was always somewhat unstable. He was isolated by his own intelligence and his completely lack of empathy with everyone around him. If he didn't already have nascent megalomania, he definitely may have had some kind of mental issue that was at the root of his lack of connection with other people. Think about it ... pretty much everyone else who used the Note had some kind of sloppy human reaction to it, whether it was guilt, pettiness, etc. Light has almost no reaction to it. He's definitely scared at first, but does he really feel guilt? If he does, he buries it very quickly. And his ability to do that really shows that no, it isn't just power, though that certainly set fire to the dynamite. There was already something pretty wrong.

I think you're right, actually. Either that, or they didn't take enough time to develop Light going crazy. (I kind of suspect that one, but I could be wrong.) Becuase a regular person would not have become a megalomaniac overnight... and Misa was already messed up about having her parents killed so I think that's why she reacted the way she did.

Those are both really good points (about Misa's motivations -- Light doesn't really have any such personal motivations) AND about the possibility that his character development just wasn't handled very well. To be honest ... I think Ohba's good at creating awesome characters (which considerable help from Obata, because a lot of what we love about various characters is rooted in artistic decisions he made about not only their looks, but their habits) but isn't very good about doing anything with them. He makes great plots, but I don't think he really values his characters as individuals, but just as pieces on a board to move around (in other words, almost all of his main characters share part of his outlook, lol -- doesn't it sound kind of like the modi operandi of Ryuk, Near, Light, and to a certain extent L? And maybe Mello too, though we're never given enough of a look into his psyche to really be sure).
