... how optimistic were people when Craig Ferguson was announced as the new host? It's not like he had a huge U.S. presence beyond his character on the Drew Carey show. He seems like a lovely guy, give him a shot.

I didn't hear about it at the time, because I was 15, and didn't give a crap about tv

That said, I think there were signs that could have lead one to believe that Ferguson would be a good host - for instance, he had worked as a standup. And there are also things that are bad signs about Corden besides unfamiliarity - for instance, his performance on panel shows where I find him annoying, uninteresting, and tediously pleased with himself.

Doing stand-up comedy isn't the only legit qualification to be a talk show host. While most Americans are probably unfamiliar with Corden, it's not like the guy doesn't have a decent resume in comedy as well as theater, arguably in more prominent roles than Ferguson did prior to his accepting the role.

I haven't seen Corden on many panel shows, but he's always struck me as a rather goofy guy who's genuinely tickled at funny situations. Different strokes, I guess.

I don't think it's the only qualification but it does seem to require many of the same qualities that I think make a good talk show host.

And again it's nothing to do with experience. I just don't like Corden and don't think from what I've seen that he would be a good fit for the role.

I know Craig loves Doctor Who but would he really have that much say in who the new host is? I mean I assume CBS has to sign off on these things and that James Corden had to audition. Craig could have recommended him but I don't know if he could have gotten him hired without approval, the show was around long before him.

Even if he ends up not being a good host, networks have bad hosts all the time.
