Family and Media

(Anonymous) 2015-03-12 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there any show/book/movie/etc. that you follow that someone in your family also follows?

What is it and who shares it with you?

My sister and I share like 90% of the media we consume. We often start TV shows together including Game of Thrones, The Wire, Doctor Who, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead.

We also go see movies together even if one of us is not interested. She saw Thor 2 with me and I saw Godzilla with her. :D

And we play WoW together.

Not in any real sense.

Like, my dad and I both like some of the same movies, but that's more about him making me watch Dirty Harry and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and stuff like that a lot when I was a kid. It's not like it's a fandom thing. And that'd be the limit of it really. None of my family is into nerdy stuff at all.

My dad likes Person of Interest.
My mom likes NCIS.

I used to have a ton of stuff in common with my brother but now he likes AMC-type stuff (Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead, etc.) so we don't have much in common any more. The only things left are Castle and TBBT and I'm getting pretty sour on them. :(

Semi kind of?

My mother actually likes the Captain America movies and the Flash show and I....know they exist.

My dad's the one who got me into Tolkien wayyy back in the day.

Or more accurately, I swiped his book and got myself into it. But we continue to share an interest.

I'm super jealous. I have no one in my family to share my Tolkein love.

Any two of us (Spouse, Spawn and I) have a subset of media that just the two of us watch, but other than seeing films in the theatre there aren't many that all three of us sit down and watch together: atm the can only think of Doctor Who, Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, Star Trek, Key and Peele, South Park, Archer, and New Girl.

We also play WoW together on and off (we're doing LFR tonight for the first time in ages).

My brother and his wife watch a few of the same shows we do. GoT, The Strain, The Walking Dead (though I don't watch that so much as I watch my partner watch it; fool me once, seasons 1 and 2...).

Mostly we really love the same movies though. Ghostbusters, bad horror movies, that kind of thing. I can always count on my brother and his wife to watch a terrible horror movie with me if nothing else is happening.

My mum and I used to have two bookmarks in every new HP book that came out. She died before Order of the Phoenix was released. I remember going to the book launch to grab a copy and realising there would only be one bookmark from then on.

Mom and I frequently trade books. I introduced her to Outlander, 13 Reasons Why, The Garden of Evening Mists, World War Z, Game of Thrones, and a bunch of others. Most recently, she recommended a book on Louis the 14 to me.

Basically, if one of us likes a book, the other will read it.

My sister and I share a lot. Most of our interests have diverged over the years, but we'll go to all of the Marvel movies together, when we can.

With the Harry Potter movies, we saw as many as we could together (for 4, I was away at school and for 7, I was still in school.) When the last movie came out, she asked me months before if we could go to a midnight premiere together.

When we were really little, I always got the even number books and she'd get the odd ones. So when Harry Potter became popular, we kept with the tradition.

I wish. I'm the odd man out in my entire extended family. It's a very lonely place.

Whole family watched LOST, Breaking Bad, and Extant (why did we do that). We're still on Walking Dead, and definitely share watching Better Call Saul. But we also have a no spoiler honor code in effect about them since my work schedule means I don't always get to watch when something airs, but it's always so fun to get into discussion with my parents once I let them know I caught up. Also the united guilty pleasure is Big Brother and Survivor for sure.

My dad and I watch Game of Thrones together. I help him keep track of characters, and I get to commentate about nonsense with him ("What's the temperature there at the wall? It looks like -5 maybe where Gilly and Jon are fucking, but why does it look like the -30s with windchill the closer you get to the wall?").

Most all of the shows I'm into I watch with my little sister. If I'm not forcing her to get hooked to something, it's her getting me hooked. Right now we're especially into Person of Interest, Orphan Black, and STALKER (we are in sad anger about it's inevitable cancelling). Bunch of other seasonal stuff too, so I have an evernote list to keep track of it.

Plus there's a lot of netflix horror movie marathons, which is more of a Poe's Law Fest. And Brit Marling is currently the queen of our hearts.

eta: holy shit i forgot about video games!
Dad is a Nintendo fanboy, which means every iteration of Zelda and Mario is a must play. It used to be that my sisters and I would get him to beat the "hard parts" for us as kids. Now it's more that he'll buy the latest one, and have me play it for him.

Also, same idea with Uncharted, even though he totally thought he would never like a game on a Sony console. Yeah, my little sister and I would buy the games, and then he would tell us to finish the game if we ever around so that he could find out what happened next and also enjoy the pretty pretty hd.

I'm the media recc'er of my family. I'll usually tell my sister about something and she'll pick it up on her own time, and then my mom and I enjoy watching episodes together of stuff that I pick out and put on.

My mum shares my love of Star Trek TNG, and my dad shares my love of nearly everything else I like. Specifically LoTR/The Hobbit, Marvel/DC comics and the MCU.

And my brother and sister-in-law play WoW with me.

I read the same comics as my dad, and there's one TV show that both me and my parents watch. None of them are related to my fandoms, they are just something we enjoy reading/watching.

I share something with every family member. My dad got me into scifi, so we share Star Wars, Stargate, Star Trek, and Tolkien (although only partially since he's only read LOTR and Hobbit). My sister and I share Legend of the Seeker and MCU. My mother and I share Grey's Anatomy and cooking shows.

I still haven't been able to talk any of them into Doctor Who or Babylon 5 yet.

I used to watch One Tree Hill with my bro.

[Spoiler] We dropped it when we thought Nathan was going to die after the wedding with Haley. Also JFC Dan got away with so much shit, it was amazing to watch.

My mom and I have a lot of shared interests. We like watching the lotr movies and laughing at all the same parts and making all the same dumb jokes haha. Also we're both super into dragon age and she always texts me what part she's at when she's playing!

All of my siblings (excluding my 13yo sister) and I are really into Game of Thrones. My brothers and I generally like the same things concerning films and shows, though my brothers watch a lot more tv shows than me, but most of the shows I watch they also watch. We also all love the MCU.

My youngest brother and I have a shared interest in Greek mythology. He also got me into the Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Video Game Nerd. My other two brothers also are really into the NC/AVGN/online reviewers, but we all have certain people we follow more than others. Like, a couple of my brothers love JonTron, but I don't watch his videos at all except a couple my brothers have shown me. I watch a lot more of Brad Jones' stuff whereas my brothers don't really watch his stuff. We all love Todd in the Shadows and Rap Critic, but I tend to keep up with their new mvs more. I think we're all pretty consistent with the NC, though, at least my youngest brother and me.

Growing up, it was Star Trek for us. And comic book movies. If there was a comic book movie, we all went to see it.

With my polyfamily, we're into a lot of the same things. I need to get around to watching Teen Wolf, though, because everyone else but me is into it. The hilarious thing is that I know most of what they're referencing... from people talking about the show and fandom here on F!S.

My little sister and any new show she loves.

I tolerated Tangled but we both loved Frozen. She's pretty excited for Frozen 2!

Other than sharing every fandom with my wife, my father recs me all sorts of books and comics (he was responsible for getting me into Inio Asano's works). A few game fandoms with my sister (chiefly Pokémon and The Elder Scrolls) and a few with some of my cousins. And my mom is into TMNT. The nerd seems to run in the family.
