I do enjoy close platonic bonds, but I disagree that it is rare between two male characters.
It's only rare for male/female relationships.

I absolutely hate how most of the time in movies/television a man and woman who are not blood related can only care about each other as romantic interests. It's even worse when you know they only reason they get paired together is less because of developed storyline and more because they happen to be the opposite sex.

On the contrary no matter how compatible two people of the same sex are, they will never be romantic interests because it's too taboo.

Thiiiiiiis. It's gotten to the point where I automatically groan a little when another het romance pops up between a male and a female friend on a TV show, even when I don't have any beef against the pairing.
