(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)For me personally? I think, usually, romance cheapens relationships MOST with heterosexual couples. With homosexual couples, romance only cheapens them a bit (in part because they tend to be less drama-llama, and also because they are rare and therefore refreshing). Platonic relationships are spared entirely, so platonic friendships = best, homosexual romances = second best, heterosexual romances = worst.
Of course, I think this is more because of the bad and cliched way romance is always written in western works of fiction, than because romance is inherently inferior.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)I wouldn't say romance "cheapens" a relationship, but I do seem to end up preferring friendships in media because so many romances are so horribly written. And I agree with your hierarchy of friendship>same sex romance>het romance in terms of quality...the majority of het romances seem to have the laziest, most cliched writing of any relationships.
