I have to be honest, I know emotions are tricky uncontrollable things, but... that really does not make sense to me. Partly because I find consensual lifestyle stuff mega-hot, and slavery squicky, but only partly.

I'm honestly curious - what specifically about it squicks you out?

OP

To be honest I think it is partly my own control issues. I can't imagine willingly giving up that much control. My default reaction to even fairly normal possessiveness IRL is 'back the fuck off, you don't own me.' So that reaction is massively compounded when it comes to the idea of collars and other markers of ownership.

Re: OP

That's interesting.

I think, to me, that's exactly why it being consensual is so important. Like, the idea of somebody making a voluntary choice to do that is really, really central to the concept for me, which I think is why it was difficult to see where you were coming from.

That's also why it's so hot to me but w/e

Consensual slavery hits my makes me laugh and often forces characters OOC, because seriously Watson contracting formally to be a submissive lolololooool

Actual slavery is more of an AU situation in which characters can react ICly and hate it for what it is, so it doesn't make them "people who I have to imagine would formally arrange lifestyle BDSM"

Nothin wrong with lifestyle BDSM IRL but you gotta admit most characters if they stay IC are not the type to do it

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... WATSON as the sub?

What the fuck show have those authors been watching?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
The one where Sherlock is taller and has dark hair, therefore must be The Seme™.

I know what you mean, OP. I've known folks whose rape fantasies aren't about romance-novel ravishment, they're really into realistic rape culture, guys whispering "No one will believe you" in their ear partway through, shit like that. Sometimes the creepy and disturbing stuff IS what's getting you off, and doing it without that just misses your psychic G-spot.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps your problem is simply that a lot of lifestyle BDSM fics are really OOC and poorly written? I amreally not a fan of slavery fics, but there's a decent selection of well-written ones, whereas I can count on one hand the number of BDSM fics I've seen that I thought were even close to accurate, well-written, and IC.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way, OP. Although there doesn't have to be sex in a slave fic, for me - really I prefer it when it's not the elaborate sex-slave fantasies you see in fanfic a lot. So that's probably a big part of it.

(The other part, I think, is that I like to see my favorite characters suffering, so if they're ~really secretly enjoying and consenting~ then that... kind of defeats the purpose. Though that doesn't explain why it actively squicks me instead of just being not my kind of thing.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say they 'squick' me, but I don't like consensual slavery/rape roleplay/whatever fics either. Far as I'm concerned, the rules of consent are an unfortunate necessity of reality. Fiction can dispense with them.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
So if you had your way, in real life you'd just know if something got your partner off without having to ask, or in real life you wouldn't have to care if your partner was consenting, or your partner asking if you like something ruins your fantasy, or some other situation I'm missing, or what?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
DA but what's the point of the question?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Please print this on yourself in a prominent place so potential sex partners know to avoid you. Eurgh.

I'm not into slavery fic, but I think I get you, OP. I either want to read non-con (in which case it should be creepy and fucked up) or I want to read healthy, consensual sex (in which case I want power play away from it). I just like my consensual porn versatile and submission-free /shrugs

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand that. I don't like slavery stuff but consensual lifestyle dom/sub stuff squicks me out way more. I think because at least generally the slavery is portrayed as wrong, whereas with consensual lifestyle stuff it's portrayed as positive and healthy.

I just, I can't get past that. As a sexual thing, sure, people can do whatever in the bedroom, but the idea of someone handing their whole life over to someone else's control upsets me greatly.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally the same way, OP. I chalk it up to the fact that I like slavery AUs mainly for the worldbuilding, and while I like some of the inherent kinks and tropes (h/c, power imbalances, dubcon), I like them better when they're not discussed. My favorite slave AUs have the "master" character either feeling guilty or actively fighting the system, while the "slave" character is resentful or blankly accepting of the circumstances. I don't like play pretend with those dynamics, I'm afraid.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Any recs, anon? I have a huge weakness for slavery AUs with nice worldbuilding.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
There's one in Star Trek that I really like:

Mutable Signs, notboldly, Kirk/Spock
http://archiveofourown.org/works/333497?view_full_work=true

And I like this one in Teen Wolf:

Pack Up; Don't Stray, the_deep_magic, Stiles/Derek
http://archiveofourown.org/works/644874?view_full_work=true

I probably have a few more bookmarked, but they are unfortunately harder to find than the just for porn ones.

Text: I love slavery fics but life-style BDSM fics where the consensual master/slave relationship completely squick me out.

SB: YKINMK etc and seriously self, you think consensual roleplay is gross but something that is still a horrific part of life for many people is hot? That is messed up.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
I hate them because the ones I've read were always so preachy. Like, D/s is not just a legit way of life but the ONLY way and if you don't think so, you're probably just denying essential human nature. No way and no thanks on that.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit. Has all the fic you've come across been written by Gorians?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same. It really squicks me. I've read a few fics that had non-con but in the end it turned out they were just acting out a fantasy within their happycuddlesBDSMloverelationship, and that's made me sick every time.
Not that I've read any good master/slave things either, lately, but I used to like them. Now I'm more into noncon/dubcon/hatesex/rape.

Reasons?
I identify with the submissive part, and I don't want my masochist fantasies tainted with consensuality, because their entire point (i.e. what gets me off about the scenario) is that the victim is helpless and can NOT give or withdraw consent.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
When it comes to fic, I also prefer informal D/s and dub con to BDSM - there's something programmatic and stale about it to me and the aftercare bits always make me cringe. There's something about formal BDSM that just takes the excitement and danger out of sex in fic. Different strokes, I guess.
