Writers: what are you afraid to write?

[personal profile] sarillia 2015-03-14 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have any ideas that you love but you're afraid to actually write it for whatever reason? Maybe you're afraid of the reaction it would get or don't think you could ever do it justice or something?

Oooohhhh, good question.

Uh, most stuff I'm afraid to show people, tbh. Especially anything that I wrote for personal venting.

Probably the biggest one though is my sci-fi story with a lesbian couple as the main characters. (I guess that's one way to come out... but I have a feeling if it ever got published I'd be banned from family gatherings for the next thousand years.)

I want to use a pen name for the same reason. I'm not coming out to my brother until I absolutely have to and I want to avoid the whole subject as much as possible. I know there's not much chance of them stumbling onto my writing accidentally but it'll still make me feel safer to not have my real name on it.

I sort of freeze up on a story when I realize my personal issues are fairly transparent on the page. Trauma and problems with parents and siblings are the most common.

I don't know if afraid is the word but I'm becoming wary of writing "representative" characters (POCs, trans, etc.). It just seems like there's no way to do them "right" without getting absolutely piled on.

I mean I make characters first, not tokens. The whole "just make sure they're actual characters -- good characters -- and you'll be good" is bullshit. If they're not perfect, then you're doing it wrong and you get piled on. If they are perfect, then you're doing it wrong and you get piled on. There is literally no way to do it right where people leave you alone.

I don't need that kind of shit so I'm just avoiding doing it at all.

Edit: Forget it, I'll start over from the beginning.

I used to get dumped on a lot. I swear I once wrote a race of green-skinned humanoids that I thought had no connection to humans, and I pissed someone off because they thought I was insulting Native Americans. So I stopped using most of the labels. For instance, I have a character who considers herself female, and who happens to have a penis, and there's a word for that, but I don't use that word. I just write the character. If anyone wants to take issue with her as a character, I'll listen, but if they want to blast me for a label I'm not even using, then fuck them.

Young transman stuck in the Southern world of mystic societies and debutante nonsense.

A lot of problematic fanfic I don't want to 1) spend the time on 1a) only have have it not attached to my name and therefore nobody would know how hard I worked and why I wasn't spending time on my other fics (if I were to publish it under a different name) 1b) have attached to my name.

Recently I've really been enjoying a semi-canonical Roman slave au in my mind, but I know the fandom it is for does not look kindly on slave aus.
