Writers: what are you afraid to write?
Re: Writers: what are you afraid to write?
(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 02:05 am (UTC)(link)Uh, most stuff I'm afraid to show people, tbh. Especially anything that I wrote for personal venting.
Probably the biggest one though is my sci-fi story with a lesbian couple as the main characters. (I guess that's one way to come out... but I have a feeling if it ever got published I'd be banned from family gatherings for the next thousand years.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 04:22 am (UTC)(link)I mean I make characters first, not tokens. The whole "just make sure they're actual characters -- good characters -- and you'll be good" is bullshit. If they're not perfect, then you're doing it wrong and you get piled on. If they are perfect, then you're doing it wrong and you get piled on. There is literally no way to do it right where people leave you alone.
I don't need that kind of shit so I'm just avoiding doing it at all.
Re: Writers: what are you afraid to write?
I used to get dumped on a lot. I swear I once wrote a race of green-skinned humanoids that I thought had no connection to humans, and I pissed someone off because they thought I was insulting Native Americans. So I stopped using most of the labels. For instance, I have a character who considers herself female, and who happens to have a penis, and there's a word for that, but I don't use that word. I just write the character. If anyone wants to take issue with her as a character, I'll listen, but if they want to blast me for a label I'm not even using, then fuck them.

Recently I've really been enjoying a semi-canonical Roman slave au in my mind, but I know the fandom it is for does not look kindly on slave aus.
