My sense from reading the piece is that he's someone who is definitely on the left generally (it's hard to imagine someone having that level of familiarity with leftist thought, and displaying a basic sympathy with leftist aims, without being on the left) but, yes, not in online fandom itself.

That said, I don't think the piece really suffers much from it; it's not like he's psychologizing away the phenomena or something like that.
