SA

also according to author true Radical reform would be "abolish the concept of whiteness" rather than Structural "make black people equal to white people but black people will always Be Black And Different Because Race Is A Thing"

I think these are meant to be pretty broad categories, and groups within each could have very different approaches to a broad question like race. Also, you're kind of comparing like to like - in the author's schema, "structure" is one of the poles, whereas "radical" is one of the quadrants, and as he characterizes it, the radical position is actually basically concerned with structure. "Black people will always Be Black and Different Because Race Is A Thing" would, I think, be a Theory position (bottom left).

Also, tbh, one of my criticisms of the piece would be that he takes those labels a little more seriously than they ought to be taken, they're pretty rough groupings.

Let me see if I have this straight . . . He's criticizing people for taking labels too seriously, while creating labels for the different ways in which people use labels, and you think he's taking those labels too seriously?

I don't really think that's at all the force of his critique. I mean, it's hardly even a critique, it's much more analytical than all that, but use of labels and terminology is not the thrust of his point.

To be clear, what I take to be his basic point is that many of the negative qualities in online leftist activism come from a dissonance between the assumption that societal problems are structural in nature and can't be changed by individuals, and the demand that an emphasis be placed on individual behavior and agency (in terms of IE calling people out), especially in combination with a mindset that's skeptical about the good will of the average person or institution to begin with. The broader argument about dynamics of leftism is basically to illustrate that.

I'm not sure where you're getting the stuff about labels, honestly; would you mind expanding a bit?

I was just trying to interpret what you were saying. In all honesty, this jargon is way too dense for me.

(Come to think of it, every time that I can remember when I tried to discuss a jargon-filled piece with someone who spoke in jargon, they used jargon to tell me I was misinterpreting it, and I wound up having no idea what to say. This crosses every subject from Communism to Bible studies.)

Ah! Sorry about that, then.
