SA

Ah jeez, when you put it like that, I just realized I was kinda victim blaming Mio. Her situation with Mayu really is a serious, full on abusive relationship the more you analyze it. I always figured Mio just ignored all these "revelations" due to Mayu constantly being possessed and generally acting wonky the entire time. It must be hard for her to tell if these are really Mayu's feelings or if they're just influenced by Sae. I mean, when you run in that long tunnel before you fight the Kusabi (I only played the original FF2 btw), Mayu does beg you to run away and save yourself after all those times she guilt tripped you into staying with her. Those mixed signals have gotta be confusing.

It's been a while since I played it, I wonder if it was the game's intention for Mio/Mayu's relationship to come off as so abusive.

I honestly don't know Tecmo's intention. At first the game makes it so they are just innocent people trapped in a haunted village. Mayu is Mio's sister, who just happened to be possesed because she has strong spiritual power, so as Mio of course we are gonna go find her. There was even the bad ending where you leave her behind and gets a game over. It's sad, but at the same time so heartwarming, right? Then they throw in the hint in the "good" ending. At first I didn't pay that much attention, since Yandere is a popular trope in Japanese media, though I did find it weird since this game is pretty realistic. But then they put the Frozen butterfly Ending in the Wii version, like they fear the hints in the PS2 version weren't obvious enough so they just traight up make an ending to show that Mayu is a freaking psychopath. How do I supposed to feel after that? Are the other endings really happy or just so from the twins' perspective? They did add that very Yuri-tastic bit in the Shadow festival ending (I understand them dying together but naked? Under the blanket? Really?) so I have a feeling they aren't really serious about lots of them, which is why I still prefer the PS2 version, aside from horrible character redesigns.

A lot of the game is very ambigious. It's clear that the village's tradition is horrible and fucked up, but if the right solution (for Mio and Mayu) is human sarcrifice then should Sae and Yae have not run away so Hell never never broke loose? About Sae and Yae, is Sae really pitiable since it's implied she fell on purpose (which Mayu mirrors) and went against her sister's wish of not wanting to kill her.Etc... In a way, I like it because my mind can fill in the gap and I like neutral stories, and Fatal frame games aren't the best in characterizing.
