(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)It's not immediately obvious at first, but the wish-fulfillment nature of the story does become clear when the rescued IJN officer puts forth his idea of a "Zipang" - a Japan that exits the war, abandons its territories, but keeps its all-powerful military.
By contrast when the Zipang crew meet Yonai he believes that as in our world, only a truly crushing defeat would dislodge Japan from its ultimately suicidal course of trying to dominate Asia and the Pacific.

This is kind of unfortunate because otherwise the time-travel idea is a really awesome one.
