Agreed. Not to mention the pay had to be meager. The store didn't have many customers. At least repeat customers. Bernard chased them all away.

BUT!!! If you're a good/sweet employee, the customers would return to see your smiling face, or because they pity you and wish you would leave there but understand if they don;t buy books, your pay would be as miserable as they are when they enter the shop!

Well, I think most of the attraction is hanging out with Dylan Moran, if we're being honest, so I can understand why people think that.

No way. I can't stand the 'customers are always right' mentality and I'm a grump myself. I also think being professional in retail is incredibly boring, and I crave personality in a workplace that I don't care about. If I'm working there just to make some cash for now, rather than striving to find a career in it, I'd love for it to be like Black Books.

I think the only thing that really would bother me is if there are genuinely great, lovely people that come in and get shit on for no reason by the alcoholic boss. That would be pretty hard to let slide.

I'd never want to work there. Or shop there. It's really only good for comedy, you are 100% right.

I do kinda wish I could own a bookstore & just lounge about all day yelling at customers & reading (I don't drink or smoke, nor is it possible for me to live/work anywhere dirty, so just the cranky for me). . . too bad that's not financially feasible.

I don't know how he stays open at all, since he doesn't even let customers stay in there long enough to buy anything. How many sales did he complete throughout the entire series? A handful?

I was working in a book store when I first watched this and it was like a stick of sugary wish-fulfillment pored directly into my brain. It made me hiss with glee. Basically, I had fantasized about saying some of the things Bernard said to his customers to MY customers and yeah. So perfect.

But yes, in reality, it would suck working there.
