I know how you feel. I can't say I have much interest in the 'gaming community', but it would be nice to see more female gamers who are good.

I don't get the half of your hair in another colour thing. It makes her look like cruella de ville

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's actually a thing. And it IS called "a Cruella."

Watch Smosh? I think that's the one where the requisite Girl of the group is a highly ranked international DOTA player whose stats are better than everyone else on the channel.

You mean Mari? I dunno much about her skill level but she's great!

I understand why you would want to see some talented female gamers, but...maybe she enjoys it? If she has fun that's reason enough.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly the way she keeps losing and acts all happy and giggly about it seems very fake to me.

I've never watched this but honestly, people are different. I don't like losing; I won't throw a fit or punch someone, but it does irritate me. Some people don't care much, or even find their awfulness a certain kind of amusing.

I don't know if that's the case with her, but I'm not going to automatically be suspicious. IMO the more girl gamers the better.

I don't know on one hand reaffirming the stereotype that all girls are bad is annoying. On the other hand a entertaining but terrible guy would not be judged by the same standard. Honestly women aren't all representative for all women.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That'd only happen if people could be bothered to have more than one woman on... anything. On second thought, better have more than two, lest they be pitted against each other.

She looks just like a girl I knew in high school. O_o I had to look twice to make sure it wasn't the same girl! (It's not.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched a few of their gaming episodes - mainly because I wanted to see more board game shows and was actually wondering myself why she never seemed to win. I was thinking it could be because she was so focused on hosting? But yeah. Might try the other show someone mentioned.

Bad news - YOU are the one who's part of the problem, not girls who are bad at games.

Sure, wanting to see talented girls represented in my entertainment is a huge problem all right.

On the flip side of the coin, it annoys me so much when girls are pressured to be ~super good~ just so they can fit in with the gaming community. Guys are allowed in even if they're mediocre. For women the bar is much higher.

If she's having fun, who cares?

I WOULD like to see women who are good too, to clarify. I would just like to see more women representing gaming, in general.

Agreed. The solution isn't to let only the women who are good at games in, but to have more women in these spaces in general so that there's a mix of good/not good, y'know like there already is with guys.

Why on earth are you watching Game Grumps for stellar game playing. What kind of weirdo are you.

Yeah, I think most of this can be explained by confirmation bias and simply the videos you happen to watch. (Unless you watch every single video, which I doubt.) From where I'm standing Suzy is eh, alright and Barry is actually kind of bad at most games. Really good at some games, bad at most.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Eat my ass. I'm a girl that just isn't very good at games, no matter how much I like them-- and I do! I play games all the time, and all kinds of them! I'm just not that great, my coordination's not there and I'm bad at spotting patterns.

Suzy makes me feel so much better about it. Because people like you make me feel like shit for being a gamer that's not that good. The bar is so fucking high for girls to begin with, and people like you make it so much worse. I love that she's part of the show, and is allowed to be not great-- just like the rest of them, as you already mentioned. Why does Suzy have to be great when the guys aren't?

So basically, fuck off with this playing into the already-impossible standards we're facing. Suzy's awesome.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sick of this 'participation award' coddling bullshit just for being a girl who plays games. She's not awesome. It's fine if you suck at games and still enjoy playing them, but nobody else wants to see that shit.
If you suck at games why the fuck are you a part of a gaming channel for others entertainment? People who suck at games just frustrate people. It really doesn't matter whether they are male or female, I don't want to watch a gamer who sucks.

Text: DISCLAIMER: I like Suzy. I believe she’s a nice and sweet person.

But I can’t bear to watch it when she plays with the guys. SHE IS SO BAD AT EVERY SINGLE GAME I wonder why she even bothers doing it and embarrassing herself every time.

I’m a girl and a skilled gamer myself, I hate the stereotype that girls suck at games, I hate that I have to deal with the stereotype all the time, and I hate that she’s doing her part in reinforcing it (on such a popular show no less).

It’s petty, I know.

I just wish they’d have a girl on the show who could actually play and compete with the guys, It’s not like the guys themselves are amazingly good to begin with!
(except Barry)

You know, years ago I was like this too- I'm a woman and I'm pretty skilled at videogames because I've been playing them since I was a kid. And I started to feel like I had to be PERFECT at all times with all kind of games because god forbid I was THAT girl that gave other female gamers a bad name by sucking, amiright?
That soured my experience with online competitive games so much I just stopped playing online altogether. Now I still don't play online pretty often -mostly because the online gaming community is filled with immature idiots who cannot keep their dumb mouths shut for a sec- and I'm pretty happy with my single player experience. I'm still pretty good at most games and I don't mind if I'm less good at others, because one day something just clicked in my brain and I though "is really THAT important that I perform good? Aren't games supposed to be played for fun? And let's be honest, idiots that plays gatekeeping? Will always find excuses to say "videogames are not for women!". Because they are idiots."
Ever since that day, my life has a gamer has improved to god-like levels. I have fun with what I want, I don't play games that doesn't interest me just to prove something anymore, if I want to play a dumb browser game I do without feeing guilty, if I want to play experience like "dear Esther" I do without thinking that I should keep it hidden because "it's not a real game". And, most important, I am welcoming toward all kind of people, whenever they are good at gaming or not, and we all have a lot of fun together.
That, for me, it's way more important that proving that women are good at gaming.

I hate YouTubers in general, but this chick looks like a gaming tryhard.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I understand, OP. Its frustrating enough to deal with the 'girls are bad at games' stigma without having well-known women in gaming vids being terrible at games.

I don't watch a lot of Game Grumps but I watch a lot of Yogscast vids. Kim is terrible at every game I've seen her play with the others. Everyone else in the Yogscast is decently skilled at most things they play, some (like Hannah, Lewis, and Alsmiffy) are fucking amazing at most things, and then there's Kim who is often so far behind that she can barely participate.

I feel bad for getting irritated with her, because she comes off as genuinely sweet and like she's trying to improve, but at the same time I can't help but feel like she kind of drags things down.
