Is Dexter a Netflix Original? What the hell were they thinking with that, so gross.

NAYRT and it's Derek, not Dexter, but yes, it is, and it's totally ridiculous

the point where Ricky Gervais walks into the room and says "So, I play a mentally handicapped guy who works in an old folk's home..." is the point where you should just stop the meeting

(the weird thing is I don't entirely hate the show) (but that's 100% because of Kev and Dougie, nothing to do with Gervais)

Oops, sorry, I think that Dexter secret was stuck in my mind when I was replying.

Ugh, exactly. Why did they think that was something to throw their money at? I haven't actually even seen the usually annoying ads for them like with the other shows when I'm using. They shoved House of Cards/OITNB/etc in my face. Maybe I was an exception? Maybe they realize they fucked up.

I like the idea of the kind of show though, a retirement home could have plenty of laughs, but. just. not that.

I don't know and haven't done a lot of research. But I would bet that what they were thinking was "This is Ricky Gervais" and that was the end of it. I think Netflix just wanted to be in the Ricky Gervais business and that's why they made the show. And looked at from that angle, you can almost see the logic.

And the other thing is that, IIRC, Derek was one of their first original deals, so that might have played into it as well.

(Fake edit: apparently, looking on Netflix, it was a joint deal between Netflix and Channel 4. But I think the reasoning still stands otherwise)

Dexter is the most sensitive thing he's ever done. Yes, it's highly cringe-worthy but he inhabits that character well and the portrayal is moving. I see and agree with much of the criticism here but that character is proof that Ricky Gervais has a soul and that it's a good one, even if he doesn't believe in it.

No, it is proof that he is a supercilious dickhead who *thinks* that patronising 'handicapped' people makes him a nice guy. Doesn't.
