Are they happy in the end? I read like 4 of the books and the books were like a train hurtling down into a pit of endless despair and misery.

Avoid the later books. Goodkind goes down the objectivist rabbit hole and the books become more about preaching than about story.

Yes, the are happy in the end. And on the tv show as well.
