Just started playing Mass Effect! Oh my god, it's amazing - except for the weird hints at romance with Kaiden. I never take him on missions, I rarely talk to him, and I usually pick the Paragon/nice person dialogue option for everyone. For some reason this nets me "wow, great friends!" with Ashley, Liara, and Garrus, and "omg you're so cute let's have a subtext moment" with Kaiden. YOU'RE BORING GO AWAY.

Also it makes me sad that Ashley is a space racist.

Should I look up who is romanceable in ME1 so I won't be disappointed later? Probably.

Kaidan is a romance option for FShep and Ashley is a romance option for MShep. Liara can be romanced by both F and M Sheps.

Garrus is space racist too. =(

Ah, okay. The only thing I'd ever heard was that there are no MNPC/MShep relationships except for the third game, but I was under the impression there were more romance options. I'll probably try for Liara, then, thanks.

Both Garrus and Ashley I initially liked, and then occasionally they'd toss out random lines that just made me go "D: wut". But Garrus strikes me as more young and brash? Like, "I know what's right, I don't need all these stupid rules, those are never useful, I know best because I am best." Whereas Ashley's more of "can't trust them dang foreigners," which I dislike more because it seems like less of something that can be fixed with learning and maturing.

Kaiden I would like if he were a person, but as a character he bores me, and I kind of... constantly forget about Wrex? So I'm running around with Liara and Tali, who are the frickin' best, and watching them interact with each other back at the Citadel is frickin' adorable. They're both such geeks and it's great and oops I kind of want FShep/Tali/Liara.

sigh. To the fanfic machine! After I finish the game, that is.

There are more options in the second and third games. You're just very limited in ME1.

Honestly, Garrus and Ashley are both pretty understandable. Garrus clearly hasn't examined his prejudices and Ashley is trying too hard to please a xenophobic institution, but their actions contradict what they say. There's even a minor mission late in the game involving a human supremacist group, and if you have Ashley in your party when you do it, she'll call the supremacists out on their xenophobic shit.

Yeah, I just got back to the Citadel after picking up Liara and ran into Rear Admiral Whatsisface, that wants to inspect your ship and is a dick about it ~~but I maxed out my Charm as far as I can, haha~~. He promptly gave me the same "you have aliens on your ship?!" bull I heard from Ashley, so it's at least pretty clear where she got it from. Doesn't mean I like it any more.

It does kind of confuse me that all the space-racist human characters don't want to serve with turians in the Alliance. Like, a) it's literally called the Alliance, and b) didn't the turians start the damn thing? Get over yourselves, humanity.

lol, the name has nothing to do with them allying with other species. The Alliance is made up of Earth + all the human colonies in space; it's basically meant to be a political body that represents humanity/humanity's interests to the rest of the galaxy. Not only was it most certainly not created by turians, but it was established shortly before the First Contact War, aka the war between humans and turians and, as the name implies, humanity's first contact with another intelligent species. It's unsurprising that the war continues to color human interactions with the galaxy, and there's bad blood about it on both sides. Saren, for example, is a respected Spectre despite the fact that he's quite vocal about his anti-human sentiments.

You gotta understand the context.

It is an absolute travesty that Femshep can't romance Tali. >:(

(Also, it sort of started out as a joke with a couple of friends, but I actually ended up pretty seriously shipping Tali/Liara. Whole lot of dork to go around that pairing.)

*makes noises of overdramatic anguish* I know! It makes me sad that there's not some way to get the entire group romantically involved with each other, just for the sheer crack value. I mean, I get it from a technical and creative standpoint, because opening it up to non-monogamy means a factorial's worth more lines to write, voice, animate, etc, etc, etc. Which is probably the reason there are only three options in this game, too, since it's the first one and probably had way less of a budget than the next two did, after it turned out to be successful.

Bah. I sign up to be a space spec ops lady and now all I want to do is play matchmaker. What is my life.
