I think it's what he represented for her instead of her staying in love with him (The end is dumb). Because of his influence, she broke free of a life she hated and went on to live the one that she'd wanted. She got to meet and marry a man whom we can assume she actually loved and enjoyed spending time with, and got to build a full life with him, instead of having to marry for money. He remains important to her because of all of that.

Also, I think there's a little bit of the "what could have been" at play with that sort of thing. Sometimes, the person you lost before anything had really even begun looms larger than the person you got to have a life with, because possibility had a weight to it that actual experience doesn't. It's a trick of the human mind. I guess it's the thing that makes us explore, create, and invent, but it seems counterintuitive.
