Re: Epic Love Stories
Day late response is late, but yeah. Defense of Rose/Titanic coming right in.
Honestly, when I first watched Titanic I thought the same thing re: Jack/Rose FOREVER. But rewatching it as an adult, idk, I see their love as the friendship/inspirational aspects being more important than the outright love. Rose would be dead many times over without Jack. She would've committed suicide that one night. And then even if she had lived and married Caledon, it would've been a loveless marriage, she would've felt trapped her whole live, etc.
So Jack will always be to her, that man who opened up all those doors of opportunity to her. Who showed her that she could venture out on her own, make her own way through life, pick up horseback riding, etc.
And you could also say, well, it's not feminist that she needed a man to inspire her. I personally like to interpret it as a reversal of fridging a woman to give a character manpain. They fridged Jack and she took as what it was and continued on to live a full, enriched life.
Also I never saw how her love for Jack necessarily superceded her love for her eventual husband. Yes, when she died/dreamed/whatever she made out with Jack, but I think that was more because she'd finally recounted her whole history to another person/was thinking about it/that's also who the audience cares about/etc. Nothing to say she isn't also missing her husband who I assume is dead as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 12:25 am (UTC)(link)For me it helps that, thanks to a secret here some years ago, I headcanon that the husband was Christian from Moulin Rouge.
