I think it's funny to see this secret today.

Just recently, a podfic of one of my all time favorite fics was posted, and I was listening to it just for kicks, to try it out. The person reading it was kind of monotone and I think their voice is kind of weird. It didn't fit the characters at all, and it didn't fit the story particularly well.

So I feel you, OP. I feel you.

A reading is not the same as a drama production, they have different standards and caters to different tastes and wants. A good reading can for example have nice pacing and clear pronunciation; two things radio dramas not necessarily offer.

And audio fic ARE fan works after, with all the charming faults amateur works are bound to have. Give it a few more tries and note the name when you find a reader that pleases you.

Ok, I don't usually comment here and I'm not the biggest fan of podfics too but I just have to do rec a pod fic!

I remember listening to this podfic the first time. I remember coming out of it dazed and stunned by how gorgeous it is (both the voice and the writing) and then going around for a few days in a daze and then listening to it again. In fact, I listen to this podfic from time to time and it never gets old.

Not sure, if you are into HP fandom or Drarry, OP, but I recommend listening to it nonetheless. The voice of the podficcer legitimately sounds like Draco Malfoy (the fanon version of Draco Malfoy I guess) -- raspy, low, sexy. It is pure sex, I swear. But the podficcer is also amazing at getting the other character's voices right and all her pauses and emphases are just right (and that damned British accent is just sexy on its own). I was not surprised to find out that the podficcer studied radio drama or something to that extent. Anyway, to me it is a perfect podfic and I have trouble getting into other podfics because they are not narrated in the same way.

I don't approve of voice acting in podfics. I was listening to Ready, Fire... (Avengers) and found it quite distracting. If appropriate pauses are there and the quality is ok - I'm happy with the podfic.

This. I don't want affectations in my podfic. Acting tends to distract me from the words if I don't agree with their dramatic choices. I just want a clean reading in a pleasant voice.

Yeah, voice impersonation is kind of a ridiculous thing to do unless you're already good at it. I read a joke fic for instance, and while it's the opposite of how to pod, it's fairly normal until I say something as Jeff Goldblum.

When podficcers try to overly resemble a character, rather than read believably, they sound like my desecration of Jeff goldblum.

Text: I love the idea of podfics, but all the one’s I’ve listened to were TERRIBLE.

Most of the time the podficcers don’t even try to imitate the character’s accent and mannerisms. If you’re not going to try, why bother?
