I never really got the Digimon fantasy. Having a creature with the power to fight never seemed as impressive to me as having the power to fight directly. Maybe it's more about having a friend who will never abandon you? I dunno. (Folks certainly flip out when the fantasy is broken. The rage I've seen over adults having Digimon partners is matched only by the rage over "traps" dating women instead of men.)

Maybe it comes from a place of wanting endless possibilities when it comes to cool badass appearances and abilities without having to change your own body (which can be frightening)?

For me I've always been more of a "yeah I'll be a Pokemon trainer!" nerd which means I could have a team of multiple Pokemon, and the variety is appealing. And either way I think the companionship is probably part of it too for many people.

Of course, I do sometimes wish I could just be something badass, like a Pokemon or an animal...I guess it's a different level of appeal. I'd have to really give up part of myself, in that case, but sometimes it's worth it, in my mind.

Oh it's absolutely the friend who won't abandon you thing, are you familiar with daemons from 'His Dark Materials'? I've always wanted one of those and Digimon seem similar plus they can turn into giant catastrophic monsters packing fucking missiles (when they aren't little creatures you can cuddle like a pet and talk shit over with)

Plus in Tamers there was biomerging.

I'm the same way. I'd love to have a Digimon partner, but if I were a Digimon I'd prefer to be alone. With my luck I'd get some kid I can't stand that wouldn't let me do what I want to do. I'd be more of an Ash's Charizard than someone like Agumon.

Coincidentally I'd love to have an Impmon as my partner (although one not as sassy as the one from Tamers).

to be fair, I think Ash wasn't a bad kid to have as trainer.

I liked that Charizard got to go through "puberty" and that he didn't get blamed for it.

Yeah but that's the point: I'm under the impression evolving is a very slow process potentially taking lifetimes and tons of fight/hard work/dumb luck. By teaming up with a kid the digimon can use them as a battery or hack or what have you (also: usually works out to decent companionship or even a soulmate scenario)

In Adventure it was a destiny thing that the monsters pretty much had to go along with for the sake of the world and in Tamers having a human partner = power.

Text: I’d love to have a digimon. But if I were a digimon myself, I would not want a partner. Like, I can’t digivolve without the help of some 12 year old kid? No thanks.

Here’s a picture of Impmon, judging me for this double standard.
