You didn't screw anything up. Not everyone has the same childhood experiences, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. You're not missing any important formative landmarks by having not watched a few specific anime series as a kid.

at least you (presumably) didn't miss out on disney movies

the shit you get for not seeing some of those is kinda amazing

+1
Some of the looks I've gotten for not ever having seen Beauty and the Beast are like I kicked a puppy or something

Anime really hits the spot when you're a preteen/teen. But there's nothing wrong with missing out either. As the comment before said, it's impossible for everyone to have the same experiences.

I don't feel like I missed out but I dismissed anime as a whole when I was a teenager, so I know how you feel.

I've since watched and loved a few, but none of the ones I was "supposed" to love back then.

I remember being drawn to the style in the 90s/very early 00s but due to being poor I didn't have a lot of access to the stuff. Now it's everywhere and I can't be fucking bothered looking at another goddamn moeblob.

Honestly, everyone's childhood experience is different -- I didn't really get into a lot of music until the internet came around, same goes for comics. I'm well and truly caught up now, but there's no shame in not doing that.

Depends on your interests and such. I liked Kill la Kill just because it was SO over the op and WTFy. The Future Diary was a train wreck that made me SO MAD, but I just couldn't stop. D:

Panty and Stocking was just so weird, gross and hilarious that I love it.

I used to be really into anime and manga back in the day, but I've gotten so picky these days. I always gravitate towards those that have an interesting premise, regardless of style, though that helps, too.

no...

I think you're being pretty normal there.

Yeah but you also get to miss out on the experience of going back to some old anime goop and realizing it sucked, or just falling out of love with it as it goes on forever and even and gets shittier and shittier. So you probably come out even.

Some recs

There are some series that are made for older folks. Cowboy Bebop is good no matter your age. So is Princess Mononoke. So is Moribito. Try those and see if you like them.

Oh man, Rayearth. I loved that one.

Text: As a child, I had a “yuck” aversion to anime style people, so I missed out on every big series from the 80s to the 90s.

I tried to watch them as an adult, but they have the kind of flaws I could only ignore if I were a child. I think I screwed up and will forever miss something that other people cherish from their childhood. :(

That sucks, cause the series that you have in the secret picture is one of my favorites. Especially the anime. :C

Um... yay, Umi art! Nothing to do with the secret, but it's nice to see a Rayearth character. Obviously, I'm a fan, unlike the OP.

Enh, we didn't start watching anime really till we were an adult. (Except for a couple Miyazaki movies, Pokemon briefly, that kind of shit.)

Honestly, it's probably just as well. I'm much more able to find the shit I LIKE now.
