That's kind of subjective, though -- "things that make a community good", I mean. And nothing is going to be good for everything. The structure does have some drawbacks, and...

Hmm, I guess the only thing I really disagree with you about (unless you're saying it has no good points) is that I don't really see how it's all that addictive?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrm.

Well, that's not really the part that I expected to have to argue for, because OP started by saying it was addictive.

But if you asked me, I would say that it's addictive because of the almost infinite unending amount of content out there, the constant gratification in terms of seeing things you like and interacting with others even in a very 'light' way, and then also the emotional intensity that people give the content especially when you get into stuff like social justice and arguments

not sure if that makes sense

OP

So I tend to have a problem with being addicted to the internet anyway. It was LJ for a while. I'm just finding Tumblr's style addictive right now and fun.

nayrt

most popular sites have addictive properties to them, suppose they're so common place people don't really notice them

like and notes stats for one. the way the dashboard is set up, you have to be consistently active for people to notice you. and the level of interaction and reach you get is almost completely dependent on how many followers you have, which you acquire by being active.

Some people get addicted to sites like that because they don't socialize enough, or they want a 'safer' way to do it. I was addicted to 4chan for a while because it was anon, and didn't have any sort of stat counters, and because I was lonely. Tumblr is sort of similar in that it doesn't require much personal information and it allows you to interact without having to connect or put in much effort.

"I was addicted to 4chan for a while because it was anon, and didn't have any sort of stat counters, and because I was lonely."

I'm addicted to F!S right now for much the same reasons. Or if not technically addicted, then certainly using it as a crutch in a similar way.

If you don't know what makes it addictive then you either haven't used it or your not using it right.

People always complain about tumblr, but most of them don't even know how to get the most out of it.

The only thing I hate about tumblr is SJW harassing people.

orrrrr it doesn't actually do the sort of things that some people are addicted to? It's like people are different, or something!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people are also just never gonna like it, even if they do know how to get the most out of it. I mean, I use it because that's where my fandom is, and I think I'm using it pretty well (have a decent amount of followers, have made some acquaintances, my content gets plenty of likes and reblogs, etc). But the platform just doesn't do it for me the way message boards and LJ did. That's not gonna change.
