Many orders of magnitude, actually.

Wikipedia lists America's murder rate as over 15 times higher than that of, say, Japan.

Of course wikipedia is not the most reliable, but still.

You have to realize that the US is quicker claim murder than a country like Japan. Japan is more likely to say a murder is a suicide than an actual murder seeing how suicide is less of a social taboo than murder. There was actually an interesting article about how people have taken advantage of this and have killed people for their life insurance policies.

Eh, I'm not sure that would explain such huge discrepancies, though. I mean, assuming we go by a 15 times higher murder rate - I mean sure, I guess some could be uninvestigated staged suicides - and maybe there are differences in legislation that make things fall under "manslaughter" more easily than murder - but really, I don't believe that explains the statistic.

Some countries/cultures have significantly higher murder rate than other. I think sociologists are still having a (very long) field day with investigating why exactly that is.

Oh, make no mistake. I am sure Japan has a much lower murder rate than the US. Just not the one they are selling.

How about Canadian vs US murder rates? Bet the difference is more than can be accounted for due to the 10x bigger US population.

Japan is a weird situation though. A lot of murders get labeled as suicide there. It's not an apt comparison.

But compared to the crime rate as portrayed on IE CSI?

Well actually it's kind of a bizarre question, because you really can't estimate crime rate from CSI. IDK.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, even if we assume 1 ep of CSI = 1 week, generally a couple murders per ep, 100 murders or so per year for a big city isn't unheard of.

I wouldn't suggest it was intending to actually estimate the local murder rates, but as someone who lived near cities all my life, it never seemed like an unusually high rate (unlike, say, the murder rate in good old Cabbot Cove....)
