God I can't tell you how many times I argued with a guy (from England, naturally) who swore up and down that if he ever lived in the US he'd have a whole arsenal of weapons in every room because he was genuinely worried he might need them.

Even in our highest crime areas, that's not necessary, and he's an anesthesiologist -- he'd never even come NEAR the poorest neighborhoods. But still, he was convinced the US was some sort of lawless backwater where everyone had a gun and if you got offended, he'd say you're just a blind idiot.

I have a lot of European friends and I love them dearly. He's not one of them.

LOL! Maybe you should've told him that you'd love to move to England since everybody has the Queen over for Sunday dinner, all the time, and all British guys are hot, urbane gentlemen, etc. etc.

Judging from your stories, all of your friends are incredibly bizarre. How do you keep meeting people like this? Is it over games?

Man, fuck normal people. Normal people are freaks.

(But yes, most of the folks I know are either met through F!S, TTLG forums before i left it, or my days in the 90s Sonic fandom.)

I would bet that in my state most of the people who have any kind of personal arsenal actually live way out in the boonies, not here in the city. They are probably way too paranoid to live in a city.

Also, hunting is popuar around here, so you can't judge things like crime rate, danger levels, or paranoia on gun ownership alone. I have friends who own rifles that spend, like, 360 days a year locked in a gun safe in the basement only to come out durung deer seaon and there's never ammunition in the house.

It's a pretty common global stereotype of America - that it's ridiculously unsafe. I have a lot of Japanese friends and nearly across they board they think the States is dangerous to go to, like they're gonna get shot.

I kind of get the feeling that Americans reinforce that stereotype, though. The first time I went on a trip by myself to the States a dude on the plane said I shouldn't let anyone know that I was a woman alone and that it was dangerous. So.... yeah.

Oh, and to add some racial nastiness to this: I've had Japanese friends flat out say things like "I heard X city in America is so dangerous because there's lots of black people."

Yeeeeah.

Pffft. I grew up in Texas. Kids DID get murdered at my school, and in surrounding schools. (One drive-by shooting at mine, another had a guy beat his girlfriend to death in a stairwell, etc.) Guns were all over.

I have never felt the slightest inclination to own an arsenal, because I know it'd be far more likely to be used ON me than BY me. So far, I have survived.

Houston and its suburbs?

Not THAT bad, thankfully. Austin. It gets painted as some sort of island of hippie-dippyness surrounded by the rest of Texas, but that's kind of misleading.
