TTYL

Sort of inspired by one of the secrets: Has anyone had fandom friends disappear on them?

(And who knows, maybe you'll find them in the comments...)

I had a fandom friend who sort of disappeared - we were both teenagers and I always suspected her parents may have restricted her social online time. Which, in hindsight, is completely understandable. She's actually singer now - not famous or anything, but she has a Facebook page and stuff. (She was a singer at the time, too.) I've thought about messaging her but that seems creepy.

yeah and i found them a few years later, but never mentioned it because they had clearly moved on

Absolutely. I feel like I've done that a bunch as I have a tendency to drift in and out of different fandoms.

I made a lot of friends in the kpop fandom and met up with a bunch of them at the various concerts but have lost touch with most of them since.

I knew a girl at a forum who disappeared years ago, and after a few weeks her mother posted and said she'd had meningitis and was still recovering. The girl did post a few times after that, and seemed to be recovering, but then disappeared again. I'm sure she just fell out of the loop and is doing fine, but sometimes I do feel concerned.

Also, this wasn't a disappearance so much as a REALLY weird change of tone - one of my friends from another HP site changed almost literally overnight - it may have been literally overnight. In any case, out of nowhere he was saying how stupid fans were and made it clear he hated all of fandom and everything about it. No explanation, just a complete personality change. I still have no idea whether something happened that really upset him, if he was playing us the whole time, or... what. So weird.

I've...kind of done that? A bad experience can change your outlook when you're young, or you can just get fed up.

Re: TTYL

AYRT - Maybe. It was the sudden change and how nasty he got about it that confused me. It was something to this effect...

Wednesday afternoon: You guys crack me up!

Thursday night: You're all losers who don't do anything but read and write shitty fanfic. ANYONE who writes it needs to get a life and write something REAL. Also Harry Potter is stupid so is anyone who reads it. Screw all of you.

You're right that something may have happened. He was also young, high school or college, and I know sometimes teenagers and college kids change personalities/interests very very quickly. Not usually that angrily though.

One of the players in my Don't Rest Your Head game posted one night that she'd be back the next day, and then never posted again. No one had any clue what happened. The other players tried to keep the game going, but I felt weird playing without her, and when me and another player bowed out, the whole thing petered out.

(With the benefit of hindsight, I blurred IC and OOC a bit. I was playing a character who was looking for the girl he had a crush on, and then she apped as that girl and was really charming and likable, and, well . . .)

Multiple times, yea. I try not to take it too personally though; sometimes people need to move on.

Not really? Maybe? Just general falling out. Not like spats or anything but gradual lessening of communication tapering into nothing.

Sort of. I was dating my then- best friend and RP partner I'd met online and she broke it off with me. We tried to stay friends but after an argument, she blocked me everywhere and I didn't pursue it (I'm a lot happier now without her. She then dropped off the face of the internet.

One of my housemates managed to track her down on Tumblr and she's apparently living in Japan, teaching English to Japanese kids, which was news to me!

A good friend of mine disappeared last year. She always had a habit of deleting and remaking her LJs/deviantarts/facebooks, but this time she vanished without a trace. What was concerning is how she became an hardcore Christian and "angel talker" just a few months prior. I honestly think she joined a cult.

Re: TTYL

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's really weird... hopefully it's not an actual cult, and she just converted to a very strict form of Christianity.

(aka a cult)

Re: TTYL

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Not necessarily. I mean, a cult implies she's basically being forced to behave a certain way. She might not be.

(no lies detected)

It just seems like a very un-Christian thing to cut off all ties from your friends. Not even a final FB post to say "hey, I'm going offline for awhile, please don't worry about me." It makes me extra sad because while we started as fandom/RP friends, she came to my state for conventions more than once, and I flew to her state for a con around my birthday and stayed at her house for a few days. So we were more long-distance friends than just sharing fandoms.

I don't know what she went through, because she always had problems. And I hope that following religion helped her, but there were some of those "cult mentality" hints that made me wonder.

(Also I kind of wonder if she reads this place and would see this, or one of our old mutual friends does. Heh)

We call them "high demand religious sects".

My LJ flist is mostly dead these days. So many journals haven't been updated in years. Some have migrated to tumblr, and I have kept in touch with them that way (but less interaction) and some have just disappeared. I don't know if they found new internet homes or just lost interest in fandom or what. :(

Yeah, but usually I have an idea where they left off and why. There's only one person in particular I miss and wonder about because she just stopped using her accounts out of the blue. No IM, no fannish account usage, no email response either. We were working on a cool Zelda au, and I would draw (shitty) art based on her ideas.

I'd like to imagine she just didn't have time to be online, and that she's doing rather well irl compared to where she was then. Maybe even reinvented herselfonline even.

Well, subculture rather than fandom but yes, many times.

Often, it was for very sad reasons. (They were institutionalized, they went down the cult rabbit hole, they basically just left the web forever...)
