damn. what did you do from her POV?

Long term: I stopped arguing with her. From my POV, she had started getting really into social justice stuff which is fine. But then she started going extreme with white people and men are evil!!!! Which...no (also she is white). and I got sick about ARGUING about every fucking thing. So, I stopped. If she started to go on one of her tirades, i'd just be like, "Ok. Fine. *change subject*"

Sudden: She posted something on her Tumblr about Martin Freeman. I don't even remember what. I reblogged it and commented. She PM'd me and was like, "hey. Why did you add that. That is not what we were arguing about. Delete it please." So I did.

About a week later she posted the lyrics to the Lil' Cricket commercial jingle. If you grew up in the south, you probably heard this dozens of times. So, I reblogged with the rest of the lyrics. Like 15 mins later she messaged me going, "You need to delete that. Someone just told me that that post is racist."

I was confused and asked her why. She said because the logo is obviously a racist caricature and that cricket is a racial slur. I told her that the logo just looks like a shitty Jiminy Cricket knockoff. And (after googling) cricket was a racial slur in the the 1800s in the Midwest. Not exactly relevant. Plus, I have used Cricket as a nickname for girls all my life. nothing derogatory, just a nickname.

She got mad. Unloaded about how I was being toxic and bad for her sense of self and how I never fought with her anymore. I explained that I was sick of getting in fights with her but if she wanted to I could try and be more argumentative. She blocked me on Tumblr (for her mental health) and has not talked to me on FB since then.

It sucks, because she is/was my best friend and I loved her to death. I still have her birthday gift I for her all those years ago.

I hate to say this, but you do sound kind of toxic.

Refusing to have stupid arguments with someone is toxic?

Honestly it sounds like she was toxic to you, and you're better off without her, but I can see how that sucks.

I don't think she is toxic. We've known each other since kindergarten (both 25 now). She just...fell into this terrible crowd and I am too far away to get her out.

I read a post somewhere dissecting this whole 'tumblr social justice' movement and how it effected the people who fell into the same crowd as your friend. It concluded that eventually people in that crowd would cut away all forms of contact (because, like it or not, every human is flawed, or in that crowd's wording, 'problematic or toxic'), leaving them alone, and it would be up to the person to realize what they had done to get better.

So maybe she'll come around. It's a very 'phase' mindset and hopefully won't last long.

Problem is that being influenced by terrible crowd can really change people.
