In fandoms like Hetalia or Assassin's Creed where a lot of the source material is based on actual history or set in a historical period I feel that you can give detailed A/Ns if they help set the tone of the story or explain references.

Like if I wrote a Black Flag fic and used lot of terms only a 17th century pirate would know I would explain them in an A/N at the bottom instead of either explaining them as they are used or let them go unexplained.

(I am the sort of writer who does extensive research on teeny tiny details though, so for me A/Ns are a way to show off my research without stuffing the text itself with it.)

This goes for other topics as well for me. For example, if your story references a lot of sciency things that is not common knowledge I would like for it to be explained in a A/N if it's not explained in the text itself as part of the dialogue.
