ATLA - when Zuko finally joined the gang, a bunch of Zutaran shippers thought that this meant Zutara was finally going to happen. Cue Katara threatening Zuko if he does anything out of line and suddenly she was a bitch for not welcoming him with open arms/acting defensive/etc. Booterfreak made one of my all-time favorite comics re: the enormous amount of abuse Katara faced because of shipping/general fandom (http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a377/BooterFreak123/SmallVertKataraComiccopy.gif)
Doctor Who - Martha got SO MUCH FUCKING HATE for not being Rose, especially Doctor/Rose shippers who saw her as a whining bitch who wouldn't shut up about her crush on the Doctor and how she should just get over it. I introduced about ten different people to Doctor Who. A group of three of them seemed to pride themselves on wearing a I HATE MARTHA badge of honor or some shit. It was rather disgusting.
Of course this was 2007-2009 era stuff. And I know fandom has changed. But I also know that shipping is shipping, and it knows no racial bounds.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)Just that the same people who hate on Katrina would not at all tolerate it if the same stuff was lobbed at Abbie. And they use social justice to silence any discussion of Abbie that isn't 100% positive or to justify misogyny directed at Katrina.
Example, there was one tumblr user who said I was expressing misogynoir because I said one of Nu!Uhura's scenes from Star Trek Into Darkness was poorly written.
At the same time, though, she'll call Katrina a useless cow.
And if you try to confront them about this, they'll defend their actions with "social justice."
Whereas with Katara and Martha, yes, there absolutely was shipper hate (as there always is) but accusations of racism weren't utilized to silence people or to justify misogyny against a white character.

Alright, now I got you. Like using racism as an additional missile for the shipping war vs it being any sort of stemming cause. And then hiding behind said missile in the name of social justice while clearly being the kind of hypocrite who'd toss it away if it interfered with a different ship.
