it's the idea that there's just as much culture to press male kids into being shitty to themselves as girls - boys don't cry, boys are supposed to fight, boys are supposed to be boys, wear jeans, get dirty. it's the same strict old tropey ideas. teach a little boy that he can't cry over his favorite film where the dog dies because only pussies cry.

you don't want to be a pussy, little boy. man up. get the girl. what, you can't? pussssyyyyy. Repeat until the kid explodes into a hot mess of issues and depression.

that's sort of the gist of it.

it's popular topics among a lot of feminists, the ideas that the gender roles used to fuck up girls can be just as damaging to boys.

It's more than just that but that's part of it.

I'd say toxic masculinity extends to attitudes adult men have towards women, sex, relationships...it's pretty far-reaching actually. Men who are so wrapped up in being masculine and see masculinity as synonymous with aggression, power, and dominance...that's toxic masculinity.
