Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
Anyways, mindset as far as I've been able to understand.
Intelligence (and therefore stupidity) has usually been assigned on a traditional scale of IQ and performance in school and whatnot. To say that someone is smart because they know certain things discredits people who have other sorts of non-traditionally valued knowledge. In addition, to say that someone is smart because they pick things up faster discredits people who can pick things up by some other way of non-traditional learning (i.e. doing vs listening or reading). Also in a corollary to the above, it discredits people who do learn slower but still function as adequate members of society.
Their argument is that concepts such as "intelligence" are too complicated to be summed up in mere words and labels because everyone has their own sort of unique intelligence.
Also, intelligence and "stupid" are apparently racist terms in certain camps of thought because they are most often applied to black neighborhood/schools/people. Therefore it is a word used to discredit and demoralize already marginalized groups.
In a weird, twisted sort of way I can sort of get it? But overall I can't subscribe to it.
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)It bugs me because I've used the word stupid all my life. I never called people stupid, only things, usually because I thought they were ridiculous or don't like them.
"Long lines at Disneyworld are stupid."
"I wish this stupid light would change, I've been sitting in this stupid intersection for five minutes!"
"Twilight was a stupid movie."
"These stupid pants don't fit!"
"Just watch, my stupid phone will ring while I'm taking a crap."
"Animal print leggings look stupid on everybody!"
Etc...
I've never called people stupid. IE "You're stupid if you like Hetalia!" or "Only stupid people wear socks with sandals!"
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
However, to Godwin things up a bit, the sentence "it was stupid to ignore Hitler while he kept annexing Austria and other ethnically German territories" does not have a one word replacement.
It wasn't ridiculous to ignore him. And it wasn't illogical to ignore him. It was done out of a sort of fear and complacency to not trigger another World War and the belief that if they kept appeasing him, he'd eventually stop. So I guess I could say "it was well-thought-out-but-ultimately-somewhat-of-a-cowardish-decision-that-didn't-fully-take-into-account-the-extent-of-Hitler's-radicalism-brought-about-by-misguided-prediction-of-the-way-the-future-would-enfold-as-well-as-stemming-from-a-desire-to-stick-their-heads-in-the-sand-and-pretend-everything-was-fine to ignore Hitler while he kept annexing Austria and other ethnically German territories."
Or...
I could say it was stupid.
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)Depends on how you're using the word, I'd say. Lots of people use stupid to mean illogical or silly, and people of all levels of intelligence are more than capable of being illogical or silly or having illogical or silly moments.
That argument depends on the person using stupid to mean "of low intelligence" and it often has nothing to do with that at all. "I said something stupid the other day" is closer to silly or thoughtless than literally unintelligent
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)I had a rough weekend once - this was years ago, before the tumblr SJW thing and when LJ still was pretty lively, and I really tore into myself for a forgotten thing that created this HUGE ASS FAMILY DRAMA.
(which was actually a different family member being unreasonable, but ANYWAY)
I had a friend who was very nice but with a different understanding of context decide to also tear into me for using the word 'stupid' to refer to MYSELF at this time for being ableist and somehow insulting her child, who was on the autism spectrum?
Like.
Your child is not stupid, and you were not part of this.
This was about my shitshow, and you made it about you.
I don't know, this went off the rails, but the fight over the word 'stupid' has been going for a long time... and some of the fight is pretty fucking stupid.
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)Stupid is one of those words that have so many applicable meanings, none of which are used in a medical sense today, that it's impossible to declare Always Okay or Always Not Okay.
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
That's the one thing you're forgetting with the SJW mindset though. Words are always "Always Okay" or "Always Not Okay."
I was recommended to substitute the word "illogical" or "ridiculous" when need be. Nevermind the fact that you can't just swap words that have different meanings, and sometimes I'm forced to think and come up with FIFTEEN WORD PHRASES TO FULLY DEPICT SAID STUPIDITY I AM TRYING TO DESCRIBE. Nope. Clearly all words have one word substitutes and can be easily stricken from our language.
