Daddy longlegs aren't actually spiders! They're related, though. Do you know which ones you had? /curious

I confess, I don't know much about spiders - I also had to rely on Wikipedia for a rough translation. I think it's the ones in the first picture of the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae

Oh, that's not a Daddy longlegs, that's an actual spider.

They are extremely gross, to me. I hated them as a child and hate them now. They smell awful. *shudders*

Ah! Alright! We have a similar confusion about these arachnids and those spiders in my country - nobody ever really knows which ones are spiders and which ones aren't.

And... they smell? Huh. Interesting.

It's a thing - when they all clump together - and Daddy longlegs tend to do that - there is this rather gross smell they exude.... I dunno.

I really just hate them. Spiders? No big. But these guys...yuck.

Ew. I only ever see them on their own, all spindly legs flat and unmoving to the wall. Apparently, I was lucky so far.

I always thought they were kind of creepy but since I never saw them move around a lot and never ever had one of them inside the house/room(they do seem to stay outside where I live... curious), I was always pretty indifferent about them.

there is no one "daddy longlegs," because the nickname itself is regional, different places use "daddy longlegs" to refer to a different handful of insects and spiders

ooooh, ok!

That actually clears some things up. When you said daddy longlegs I assumed you were talking about harvestmen - that's what I've always seen it used for.

These do kind of look like harvestmen, even though they're spiders, with those long spindly legs.

Yeah, Wikipedia lied to me when it said those spiders are also referred to as daddy longlegs. Boo. But we have a smimilar confusion between the daddy longlegs and the spiders in my country.

Maybe it's a regional thing - some places call them one thing but not the other, etc.

Germany. Daddy longlegs are called "Weberknecht" here (lit. translation would be something like "weaver slave") but I was (incorrectly) taught by my mother as a child that a Weberknecht was a winged insect (a type of crane fly) that is also known as "Schneider" (lit. tailor). A friend of mine was sure that those thin spiders I confused with daddy longlegs in this thread are Weberknechte - but they are most commonly called "Zitterspinnen" (shiver(ing)/ spiders) or "Kellerspinnen" (cellar spiders). Then there are all kinds of names for the winged things, like Schnake, which is also used for mosquitoes. So yeah, there is a lot of confusion when it comes to those critters. (It's very much a regional thing here.)
