The idea of a "toxic person" has been around since the 80's. It's nothing new; you just learned about it now so you're noticing it everywhere. It's the same thing that happens with confirmation bias and medstudentitis.

Toxic people are a real thing. They're people who might not behave radically or be abusive, but their attitude/behaviours/life choices/personality is such that you find it a continual source of stress.

For example, I have a friend who was fine to hang out with but as soon as I tried to live with him he immediately became toxic. He was always getting disproportionately worked up about insignificant problems (ex. he ran out of toothpaste or cream for his coffee, the light burned out, it was raining, etc.) He would take it out on us too, like we had somehow orchestrated the fact that he was missing a sock after using the shared laundry. To make it even worse, he's the most passive aggressive person I've ever met, and for every imaginary slight he'd get increasingly whiny and negative and impossible to deal with.

It wasn't abuse, but we both started to hate him and were stressed when he was home. As soon as we told him he had to move out, it was like a weight was lifted. We both felt happier and physically healthier than we had in ages... basically, he was the very definition of toxic.

A side note, but I seriously doubt that it's OP's confirmation bias here. People all over Tumblr and such have latched onto the term and are literally using it more than people ever did in the 80s.

Really? I wouldn't know because I don't use tumblr, but "toxic" was definitely something of a meme in the early 90's and again in the mid-late 90's.

Tumblr does love to overuse buzzwords though, so I guess I can believe it.

I hear it more than I hear the word "basic" used as an insult, and I hear that a lot, too.

Why they insist on stealing words from chemistry, I don't know.

Yeah I feel like passive aggression is a huge element of what makes someone toxic
