Is there a name for this disorder? Is it even one?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There seems to be a name for everything else, so I'm sure there's a name for this: what is it called when you can achieve intimacy with a stranger or acquaintance, but not with friends and family? (As in, it's easier to be intimate with someone the less you know them).

A lot of us are probably already familiar with how it's easier to emotionally unload on a complete stranger than it is on someone you know. My particular problem is that for over a year, every time I tried to have PIV sex with my boyfriend, it never worked out, to the point I was starting to think I might have a medical problem of some kind - but I could use sex toys just fine, and on top of the lack of sex, I found just sleeping next to time something that took a fair bit of mental work on my part. But not too long ago, I had a one night stand with an acquaintance and I had it just fine, and slept fine with him afterwards, too.

I know there's a version of this in children - if kids can bond to strangers but not to caregivers, it's usually indicative of RAD, though this wasn't a problem I had as a kid, since I had a pretty good relationship with my parents. But is there a version of this in adults? What's it called?

Going to add here that I've never had any abuse or neglect in my life. Whatever is wrong with me, I have no idea where it could have come from.

No idea, but I think I have it too.

I always assumed it's the opposite of demisexualism.

I don't know, but it sounds similar to me. When I get to know someone it's harder to have sex with them because I keep thinking there's a mind I know in there, this is weird

Commitment issues.

DA

Idts. OP never said they wouldn't commit to a stranger, they'd just have to remain a something of a stranger. I think it's similar to how back in the day, some men and women had separate rooms and stuff to keep the romance and or mystique alive. Familiarity lessens attraction for a lot of people, and it doesn't sound unreasonable that for some, familiarity kills it

OP here, and to be honest, the AYRT may have at least part of a point - I really don't like the idea of commitment. I just don't think that's (all of) it, because this is a long standing problem. I have trouble accepting hugs from my family, but I can accept them from friends no problem.

I don't know if that actually rises to "disorder" level? I guess if it's really getting in the way of how you live your life, it does.
