Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)In 19th and early 20th century medicine and psychology, an "idiot" was a person with a very severe intellectual disability. In the early 1900s, Dr. Henry H. Goddard proposed a classification system for intellectual disability based on the Binet-Simon concept of mental age. Individuals with the lowest mental age level (less than three years) were identified as idiots; imbeciles had a mental age of three to seven years, and morons had a mental age of seven to ten years.[8] The term "idiot" was used to refer to people having an IQ below 30.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)Wait, no. That is dated, insulting Twilight. What is the new fandom of choice for the irredeemably moronic?
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
Divergent? I'm not sure how people feel about that in general but a lot of F!S seems to dislike it. (I like Divergent. oops. not love, but like.)
Re: Tumblr and ableism...confused here.
I do contend that "idiot", "imbecile" and "moron" are much much much more removed, temporally and socially, from their origins as slurs than "retarded" and would therefore still feel uncomfortable using the latter. Most people don't know the origins of the former (I didn't until you told me)
