I've come across amazing fanfics that don't get much attention and I've seen shitty fics get lots of attention. Sometimes it's about timing and the audience.

It also depends on the characters, ship, and fandom. Some things aren't as popular and don't attract a lot of readers. I once saw a friend of mine put a lot of work into a fic for an unpopular pairing and become discouraged it didn't get a lot of attention. Not a lot of people are going to read for the rarer ships.

Also the summary and tags are VERY important. What gets people to click on the fic is a good summary. If your summary is bad or you say stuff like 'this sucks' or 'I'm not good at summaries' than people are gonna assume your not a good writer and just skip over it.

Yes to all that. And the summary and tags thing is often overlooked - many authors include things like that. If you say your story sucks and/or your English sucks, many people will give it a pass. And of course, many times when the author says their English sucks, it doesn't suck nearly as hard as some natives who don't put such notes and get a lot of praise. People shouldn't be self-defeating.
