Spoilers here for season 2 of Sleepy Hollow! Also - long.
In season one, Katrina (white) was stranded in Purgatory, cast there by a demon when she dared try and fight against it and the Headless Horseman (one of the four horseman of the Apocalypse). She could sometimes contact her resurrected husband Ichabod in these kind of visions (and also Abbie Mills, the black woman) and give them information. She is a witch and she helped put a spell on her dying husband to preserve him until such time as his partner and other 'Witness' to the apocalypse could be there to help him.
In season two, we find she had a son who was taken from her/killed, and then became the Big Bad of the series. We learn she was engaged to the man who became the HH, but then fell in love with his best friend Ichabod. She's eventually rescued from Purgatory and is in the 'now' with her husband, helping to fight against the Apocalypse, mostly by being kind of double agent, pretending to believe and support her demon-raising son and HH, but secretly working against them.
Unfortunately, in season two, the writers took a character that didn't have a lot to do (and the scenes they wrote with her, either in Purgatory or in flashbacks were generally dull and not particularly interesting) and decided to make her more 'interesting' by eventually being tempted by, and then going over to, the 'dark side'. She got very 'evil laugh' and she and the Big Bad got kind of monologue happy.
Her scenes still were not terribly interesting, and her switching sides wasn't terribly convincing. The character is now, apparently, dead (though, you know, magic, Apocalypse, demons, who knows!), so if we get third season, it might go back to the fun, touching, interesting and intense friendship and working partnership of Abbie and Ichabod, instead of this awkward and rather stilted triangle of unease, distrust, and a kind of low-grade jealousy. (Though Abbie and Ichabod are not intimate, nor a 'ship' of any kind except platonic friends and working partners.)
