O_o I haven't encountered this. I thought it was for describing situations where there might be no abuse, just that you're really bad for someone/something and they're bad for you.

Like, example: if I have a roommate and they're a diehard nocturnal partier, and I'm a diehard morning bird who demands absolute silence. We might not necessarily abuse each other, but just because of clash, that apartment could get mighty miserable, if you know what I mean.

I consider the closet we lived in during the homeless year to be toxic. Nobody was abusing us, everyone was really nice, and it was a place to stay, but I grew to absolutely LOATHE that fucking place. And then the whole house. And then the fucking NEIGHBORHOOD. I was grateful to move, just because I was worried that if the situation continued, I'd hate the whole fucking CITY. Calling it 'depressing' and 'miserable' doesn't really cover the scope of it.
