I've seen more people expressing this than actually liking them, so you're not alone, OP.

I adore them, but the first CD... Eh.

I do like the drum-beat in the Album One version of Captain Albert Alexander, though, but I'm a sucker for that sort of beat.

I can't really listen to the Album One versions of several of the songs after listening to Live at the Globe of Yesterday's Tomorrow...Captain Albert Alexander isn't bad, but Brass Goggles and On Top of the Universe are just so...empty?

I think empty is a good way to put it. In a way, it works for CAA, because it sounds creepy and cool like that, but for the others, no. :/

It's sort of funny to see this said about SPG because everyone seems to like their later stuff, but it's a pretty common thing with other bands. FWIW I have a friend who likes the lore but not the music.

Can everyone at least agree that MKIII is awful? I'll give them one more album to impress me but that one was horrid.
