Gaining fans

Common wisdom is that if you have a pairing/meta/fandom you want to push, you should write a fic to earn converts.

Has this ever worked for you?

well i once wrote a fic for my rarepair and a few days later someone else wrote a fic too

maybe if i'd kept at it it would have gained steam

Seeing fics of my rarepairs does make me feel more inspired to write my own. It reminds me of the ideas I had for them that I never wrote.

Seeing the lack of feedback those fics get makes me think I'd rather put forth that effort onto something that's at least going to engage other people and give me some feedback. I'm not going to spend hours of what spare time I have writing something that's just going to get radio silence.

As someone who doesn't always comment on fics (I'm trying to work on that), and who has a disproportionate amount of love for rarepairs, since that's all I ever really ship, your work is not wasted!

I'm writing a fic that has no reviews, (okay, one) but I'm pretty sure the rest of it will be a hollow chamber, but the point is, if I write something really good, I know it will be out there, and perhaps someone will find it and enjoy it, as it happened to me (that's how I was "converted" to a particular rarepair. Keep at it, OP!

I didn't know that was a thing.

I'm going to say no? My Vir/Londo fic, while well-received, earned me no converts. Though, I don't really ship it sexually even though I wrote a fic for it.

Ooh, where can I find this? I'd like to read it.

I love how I stopped by F!S for the first time in months and there was a B5 secret. It's like fate or something. I still need to watch the series all over again.

Yes! My ridiculously obscure pairing (out of a humongous fandom) actually managed to gain a fandom and had a small but active community (that hadn't previously existed) going for the better parts of two years. Granted, I wrote and coded and cheerleadered my ass off, but it was so, so worth it.

Yes, kind of accidentally. At least, I wrote a crossover with a kind of unexpected pairing and several people have drawn art for it.

kind of? i launched the corny/maybelle ship in ffnet hairspray fandom, and there was a definite upsurge in interest in the pairing as i wrote.

I've had people who were on the fence about a pairing come to accept or even enjoy it more because of a fic, but I've never had a fic win over someone who wasn't already in the fandom (though I think I've seen a comment like this on a fic before). I think in order to "bring in someone off the street" so to speak you'd need to a). of course have a very good fic, but also b). have that fic circulating to the widest audience possible, so like doing a huge multi-fandom big bang or Yuletide or the like.

I used to draw a rare crack lesbian pair everyone and then - and would post headcanons a lot and ask for it in request threads. I can't say it was just me but the intent was to find like minded shippers or put the ship idea in other people's head so that more fan works would happen.

Seems to have worked.
