Angry lefty while avoiding the usual anti-science traps a lot of my fellow leftists fall prey to (like GMO conspiracy theories.) My stance on cops and my beliefs regarding police as an institution has gotten me labeled an anarchist (I'm not though.) Probably best described as a free market socialist.

You can't be a free market socialist

isn't that a complete oxymoron

Only if you follow the conservative/right wing definition of socialism.

Lemme put it this way: I like the free market, I think it's a grand idea, I like it so much that I think it needs strict controls and regulations so that it stays a free market.

I also believe certain social-based sectors -- health care/emergency services, education, law enforcement (and corrections), defense, and social safety net programs should never ever be privatized because of the potential for abuse and people falling through the cracks -- the current US system is a good example of this. Technically we're already free market socialist, but we've got a little too much free market and a little too little socialism.

I'm not educated enough to tell how much of a good idea this would be, but for what it's worth, I like the sound of it.

It's a nice idea, isn't it? I think the US is slowly but surely working its way towards this, but I don't imagine it happening in my lifetime.

I agree with your views FWIW

I don't think 'socialism' is an accurate descriptor but then again, trying to insist on accurate terminology in politics is some King Canute shit, so w/e

According to Merriam-Webster, socialism is "any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods."

That sounds pretty accurate to me. The difference is that the view I'm espousing is socialism in cooperation with (positive forms of) free market capitalism.
