As a person who is neither white nor black, I don't understand the outrage.

Representation! They say. If you ask why Agent Carter couldn't have been Chinese, though, they say it's because that's too unrealistic, there were no Chinese people there.

Oh.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And if you point to the fact that Chinese immigrants have been coming to the U.S. since the mid to late 1800s and that New York's Chinatown is one of the oldest in the country, they'd probably say something like, "But they were only a small minority and it was still 90% white people!"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, who says it makes sense for a specific character to be on of the ninety percent of whites, as opposed to one of the remaining non white ten percent? It's like people forget that these are fictional worlds and authors choose how they want to frame that world and from whose perspective.

I know, right? That would only make sense if characters were being picked randomly out of a hat. Obviously they're not, writers can choose for a character to be one of the 2% of Chinese people just as easily as they can choose for a character to be one of the 90% white people. They're the creators of this world, it's weird that so many people want to pretend their hands are tied because of demographics and historical realism.

I love you. Yes. This, exactly.

So how, pray tell, is a writer supposed to create a plot that specifically addresses inequality by using a world where inequality doesn't exist? "Y'know, it would be really terrible if we didn't allow a Chinese woman to occupy this position free of derision and abuse, but hey, we do. Good game." Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of fandoms where your logic would make perfect sense. Agent Carter ain't one of 'em.

Whose asking for this hypothetical Chinese woman to be free of derision and abuse? Peggy and Angie and Sousa certainly weren't. Maybe Peggy and this hypothetical Chinese woman could bond over the fact that they're both awesome ladies that have had to over come a shitty lot in life?

Because in an era where prejudice was much more rife, the story of prejudice against white women is just as worth telling as the prejudice against everyone else who suffered from not being white and male.
