I agree on this point when it comes to works that are supposed to be complete fantasies. If you've created an entirely separate and fictional world, then you've no reason to keep it "accurate;" it's not our world, and it doesn't have to have our world's problems or social structure. In fact, I think it's better if it doesn't, and I think fantasies that aren't diverse have wasted an opportunity.

However, I don't think this logic necessarily applies when it comes to stories that are essentially supposed to be historical fiction. I also tend to agree with the idea that, when it comes to period pieces, it's not actually a good thing to erase the existence of racism and sexism. We need to be reminded of the unsavory parts of our history.
