Any sort of treatment that fixes what is broke and allows their brain to develop normally, or prevents it breaking in the womb, would be a cure. You are splitting hairs there in your terminology. If it ends up having a genetic component we can even screen for it and allow abortions, in civilized countries anyway, for medical reasons much like other damaging conditions. We'll get rid of it in time.

I'm not splitting hairs in my terminology. Any preventative measures against autism really couldn't be considered a cure because you can't treat a syndrome that doesn't occur in the first place. Autism spectrum disorder is more thought to be a phenotype, so an abortion for a genetic component in autism would be strange.

ok that's really gross.

I'd be all for a "cure" too (something that could reverse it or prevent it) but selectively aborting fetuses based on ASD is kind of awful imo.

Also, I'm not sure that would actually eliminate it. We don't know if it's 100% genetic (and I kind of doubt it is)

How is it any more awful than selectively aborting fetuses based on any other disorder, which is already done for several that are easily screened for? Presumably, the parents who would abort based on detection of the (hypothetical) markers would be doing so because they aren't equipped to handle raising the child.

Which disorders are you talking about? Some are more severe than others. I'm not really comfortable with the idea of selective abortion at all, but if it's for a disorder that is arguably not relatively severe (and some cases of ASD) are relatively mild then it's definitely pretty unpalatable to me

And as I said, it wouldn't necessarily eliminate ASD.

da

I think any on the spectrum, no matter mild, will effect this person's "peace" like in the up thread so I don't think those semantics matter to them.
