Consider that a percentage of kids in fandom today were BORN AFTER 9/11. Certainly a lot of them don't have any memories before then.

I mean, it's partly charismatic/sexy villain stuff but also, the villains in LoK were some of the better parts of the show, IMO. The whole point was that they each made a certain amount of sense given the universe and its problems, but that they took it too far. I thought Kuvira was the best represented of these, especially since you don't see her immediate "bad"ness the way you do the other villains. She's the first of them where you see the good she's done before you see the bad, so the ethical trade-off gets presented differently, as well. She's not presented as "bad guy with a point" but "she has a point, but wait, she's bad!" If that makes sense. Even Bolin fell for it for a time.

Tl;dr: overthinking it.

I think a lot of it has to do with her gender. A lot of people in fandom/tumblr flock to female characters, especially ones in position of power. Add to the fact that erasing flaws (such as political view or being a villain) is a huge part put into this and I'm not surprised at her following.

Yes, she’s young, attractive, and charismatic, but she’s also ultimately a fascist, and I mean the type of political-economic system that insists on obedience to authority, and demands action rather than thought.

Well, LOK fumbled Kuvira like it fumbled everything else. Thing is, we never truly get to see how bad she is until she zaps Bataar (and even then, no one died, which is... Stupid). We get told she has camps for everyone other than earth kingdom but this is all telling and not showing, which LOK had a habit of doing.

And then it gets even more awkward, because, despite her "camps" and the fact that the show just told us she was outright racist, Korra thinks she's worth saving and we get a 2-second redemption arc (as usual).

LOK was shit so don't take it seriously.
