What Motivates You? (fandom edition)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Besides the source material itself, what motivates you to produce fan-material?

Great fic? Terrible fic and you can do better? Meta? Artwork that begs a story? A story that begs artwork? TPB providing info or BTS stuff?

What motivates you?

I have different reasons depending on the fandom.

Animorphs: I like writing angsty!Marco. I like shipping the characters and writing about it. Plus, it's a fun universe to work in with characters I like.

Babylon 5: A fellow fan encouraged me to write an idea I had, so I did it for her. Then I write another fic based on her prompt on the kink meme.

Merlin: F!S secret Santa prompt for one fic, and I just wanted to write dub-conish Gwen/Morgana for the other.

JohnBoehner/Barack Obama series: A comment on fandom secrets during the government shut down in 2013 kicked it off, and now, when Boehner does something outrageous I can't help but write more.

My other crack fics where inspired by Fandom Secrets secrets, as well.

Often- when there's something I want to see that isn't done before or isn't done to it's full potential.

Like right now I am really tempted to write a Gravity Falls-HP crossover that isn't crack, M-rated, or part of the Independent!Harry genre. I need to go watch GF again.

Primarily the canons and the canon characters, but sometimes I'll have a mood I need to purge and I'll just grab whatever fandom/character can give it a voice and use them to write a fic. It's cathartic, and a couple of those have been among my best received stories.

This is not very trendy to admit but... comments. The difference between me posting a story or keeping it in my head/unfinished in my hard drive is whether I think it'll get any comments or not.

Wanting to connect with other people. I think most of my fics are basically "these are my thoughts and interpretations of this/these character/s, someone come and talk to me about them!"

The thing that motivates me the most is going to look for fic and not finding any. Or finding a WIP that hasn't been updated in years, a bunch of drabbles, or only one author writing the pairing/fandom and not doing a good job (in my opinion). Basically anything that leaves me wanting.

That and people writing meta that conflicts with my own head-canon. I find that it's more productive to write a story about my head-canon than argue with theirs.

Seeing awesome prompts/fun stories.

Then I see the reactions to anything that strays away from the Fandoms Accepted Opinions and I lose all motivation.

Varies from fandom to fandom.

Mostly: plot bunny with potential to rake in the comments, crappy fics (esp crappy fics with good premises), BTS stuff, and spite. I write a looot of femslash every time someone raises a stink about how gross/disrespectful/erasing of friendships/erasing of heterosexuals femslash is lol.

Fanfic is good for making me want to (doesn't mean I do) draw scenes from them. Ones with particularly awesome exchanges between characters are especially awesome for me trying to panel them out.

For writing, I'm not really sure. A mix of meta, whether I'm puking out my own and suddenly an idea takes me, or reading something cool by someone else.

And official side material too! Stuff that isn't presented in the main canon, like character bios in game manuals (or toy boxes for instance since I'm on a transformers kick lately), localisation differences, merch, extra information about the world as written by those in and outside of a main writing team, and behind-the-scenes information.

Terrible fic. How you knew, op? =D It must a widespread inclination, to write after reading a bad fic.

Also an inspiration? I 'get' characters and feel capable of writing them. Then an idea pops up and I think about a couple sciences with them. So that's how I get inspired. I might even write this idea down if I know a fellow fan who'll enjoy it.
Or if I don't have an Internet access. The complete lack of fandom content in my vicinity really motivates me.

The little voice inside my head that latches onto an idea and will. not. shut. up about it until I write it.

A narrative I can build off of, a fanbase that is small or relatively inactive, and a lack of good porn.

The trifecta.

If a fandom has this there's a high probability that I will wind up writing for it.

It's usually when an idea grabs at me brain and wont let go until I write it, but I don't always manage to finish the thing(I'm a terrible fanfic writer, so many incomplete fics have been lost to the void).

When it comes to fanart it's because I love the character or the ship so much I have to draw something for it, even if it is only the once.

Well:

1) The desire to try something new, at least initially.

2) To make something for my super-rare crossover parings because dammit, they need more love!

3) To see just how far my mind can stretch it all. I'm currently doing this with a certain story of mine.

Mmmmm. I like seeing other ppl get excited over the same things. Sometimes I like to spite ppl by drawing the rare pairs or rival pairs. Sometimes I just want to contribute to the fluff.

But most of the times I do the fandom work to see if I can. Like I see a style and go "I want to try that" or I see people saying it's hard to get fanfic attention so I'll write a story to see.

I particularly like doing that last but under new handles or as an anon so I don't promo myself.

RP. Really most of my output in Fandom is in roleplay, and my collection of RP logs are like a series of rough fanfic chapters in script format so... *shrug*.

Other than that, I also comment on fic and art occasionally, so good fic and good art.
