Someone Needs a Pat on the Back

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on the first discussion board I've been on since my teens (over half a decade has passed) and enjoying it immensely. I went out in a burst of flames from my last fandom (well, more of a burst of flounce) because of other teens acting like jackass teens. And far worse, some people old enough to be my parents acting like jackass teens.

Anyhoo, today someone on my new board made a point of highlighting my spelling error and correcting it in their comment. And they were snotty about it. (If I get into specifics I might give myself away -- in general it's like a brief lapse of mind that makes you write "know" instead of "no".) I'm the second person they corrected today in that same rude manner.

I opened up a PM and told them their manner wasn't appreciated. Then I deleted that and started writing up a sarcastic response in the thread. In the end I looked at the poster's profile and sure enough, just a little younger than my mother. And I didn't post my comment, stepped back and took a deep breath.

TL;DR: I avoided a flame war over something stupid for the first time in my fandom career. But I still feel pissed at that poster and need people to congratulate me on acting like a grown-up. Help me, F!S?

Good job! Seriously. Some things aren't worth your time and energy and internet pedants are one of them

I also find your subject line really funny because it could apply to the pedant, too. She clearly needed one so she did it herself

You did good. It's so hard for me not to respond in kind when someone snaps or snarks at me, especially over something minor. Good for you!

Heh, I need to learn from you.

Good for you.

I've found that most people who feel the need to do that kind of thing thrive on getting a reaction and validation, so actually by not giving them what they wanted you've both managed to be the mature one AND pissed them off more than if you'd written the most acerbic reply in the universe. *thumbs up*

It can be extremely difficult not to lose your cool when you feel like someone's singled you out or treated you rudely, so good on you for being the bigger person and deciding to let it go!

You might want to tell a mod your concerns? I'm not a forum mod but I am a mod on an LJ comm, and I wouldn't be happy if someone told me that happened - and given that due to time constraints, I can't monitor every comment...

I really hate when people are mean. And even if it wasn't a brain lapse and you really thought "know" was spelled "no" (I know - heh - that was an example, I'm just rolling with it), that doesn't give anyone the right to be nasty about it.

As for their age, some of the most obnoxious people I knew on forums were, if not my parents' age, far from teenagers. Even sometimes people on my side, like the person who encouraged me set up a sockpuppet account to spy on people we didn't like. Looking back, encouraging a teenager to pull that shit is... iffy.
