OP

The event we are attending is an honors conference and we are presenting several speeches during the program. Stage fright aside, I'm not very familiar with air travel and I'm nervous about not doing something right with my carry on or my packing and making a fool of myself, etc. The anxiety is beginning to paralyze me and I'm just stuck with it right now. Our flight is Thursday morning and I think I'm just making it bigger than it really is.

It's always stressful to do something you've never done before (or not done very often), and speaking in public can be stressful too. If you're anything like me, though, the anticipatory anxiety is by far the worst part; once I actually get in the situation I'm so frightened of, I find out it's not so bad and I'm okay.

I'm sure it will be all right. I know that's easy for me to say. Good luck with your trip, though - I hope it end up being more exciting than scary!

The trick to flying (in the US) is to allow plenty of time to get through screening, use a clear quart size bag if you've got restricted items in your carry-on, and wear shoes you can slip on and off your feet without untying them. Terminals and gates are clearly marked and announcements appear on monitors as well, so you're very unlikely to miss boarding announcements. Don't be afraid to ask for assistance at any step of the process. In my experience, the ground and flight staff are very pleasant to people who ask politely for anything.

OP

Thank you for the helpful advice. Reading this and all the other posts, I feel a bit better about the situation and not quite so scared. The speech part isn't too much of a problem, it's looking like an idiot on the trip that really has me quaking.

If it makes you feel any better, lots of people are tired and cranky while traveling by air, so I doubt they'll take much notice of your lack of experience.

Also, airplanes are AWESOME.

Also also, in my experience airport personnel are helpful and very understanding of people who aren't familiar with the routine (I know I needed help the first time I flew by myself).

Relax! Once you're up in the air you'll probably go from nervous to bored, with a side of "dammit why won't my ears pop". Bring some music or a book or game, and enjoy the ride. :)
