Re: Anyone going on a journey?

I'm driving to San Francisco alone on Sunday, and then to Sacramento and back twice on Monday. I am terribly fearful about getting lost, even with GPS, and I really don't want to think about the formidable hills I'll be faced with since my car has a manual transmission. Then I drive from San Francisco to LA on Tuesday and I can't decide which freeway to take.

I might be blowing this all out of proportion but the fear is there.

Don't worry about it! It's really not that bad! Certainly, the actual city-to-city stuff couldn't be easier, especially SF to Sacramento and back - completely straight shot, seriously. Getting around in SF kind of sucks if you're not familiar, I guess, but you can do it.

Can I ask, just out of curiosity, what brings you up to SF / Sacramento?

The London Symphony Orchestra!!

They're playing at Davies Hall on Sunday and Monday night and I have tickets. I'm bringing my dad (hence Sacramento) to the Monday night performance because he loves the Shostakovich 5th Symphony and they're performing it. :-)

Oh wow that's super awesome! I hope you have fun!

I don't know where you're driving from and I can't speak for smaller roads, but the I80 from Sacramento to SF isn't especially hilly. What climbs there are, are pretty gradual sweeps so shouldn't be particularly problematic.

I 80

You take I-80

wow, you really felt the need to correct that? how lovely it must be to have that much time on your hands and that much empty space in your head.

I'm not too worried about the interstates (I-5, 580 and 80), but California Street in San Francisco scares the bejeebers out of me. And lets not even talk about Lombard Street before the curvy part. My husband incinerated his clutch on that street.

I mean, I guess I don't know exactly where you're staying or going or whatever, but there's no reason you should really have to go on the really brutal hills. Like, as long as you stay out of Nob Hill/Russian Hill you're probably going to be mostly alright. And there's no reason you should have to do that - I mean, Civic Center itself isn't really hilly at all, and you don't actually need to go anywhere north of like Bush, I don't think.
